The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

— Psalm 16:6

What is an inheritance? We usually think of it as a portion of an estate given out when someone dies. It is property or money left with instructions to give to someone, a charity or even a pet. In this passage, it means the same as a portion. But, the inheritance from our Father is so much more.

Let’s step back to the first line of the passage to the boundary lines. David is writing about the boundaries God has given him. David does not feel trapped by them. He knows God’s boundaries are given to allow him to move freely, to live the life is David is meant to live as “a man after God’s own heart.”

In the same way, the Lord gives us the same boundaries. When we step outside of them, we are unsettled. That is when we are disconnected from Him. God never moves, but we do. We are not walking on Christ Jesus’ path. We encounter negative feelings in our hearts and just like the love we spread when are with Him, we spread the negativity to others.

In 1 John 4:19, John tells God loved us first – our inheritance. Elsewhere in the New Testament, Paul reminds us we are a royal priesthood, chosen and adopted by Christ Jesus. Unlike a human inheritance, we can claim our inheritance from God now. Earlier in 1 John 4, we are told that God is love and if we remain in God, God remains in us. Both 1 & 2 John outline the boundaries and our inheritance. Ultimately our purpose is to walk as Jesus did in the world. You and I need to pray and develop our relationship with Christ Jesus, so that we can claim not only God’s love but his plan for our lives to bring hope, love, joy, peace and kindness to this crazy world we live in.

Will you join me in a prayer? Father, I claim my inheritance. I pray to live and love freely within your boundaries. I will meditate and listen for your guidance and wisdom. Lead me, Lord, and light my path to share your love in the world.

In Jesus name, Amen.

Therefore, as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, overflowing with gratitude.

— Colossians 2:6-7

Let’s go into the world and share our inheritance, so others may know Christ Jesus in their lives!
