Advent 1 – The Invitation
Friday, December 7
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Going to Grandma’s for Christmas was the best. The minute I walked in the door the smell of freshly baked apple pies and turkey would welcome me in. Grandma would grab me and give me a big hug and say with her strong Polish accent; “Come, sit and rest, dinner will be ready in a bit.” It was such a joy to know I didn’t have to worry about anything. I didn’t have to jump up to work and make everything just right. Often after dinner we made Grandma rest while we cleaned up the dishes. We did it out of our hearts and bellies that were filled to the brim with such thankfulness.
Rest is something we get very little of these days with our overly busy schedules—especially during the holidays. Yet, Jesus calls us to rest in Him. What a great invitation and something we should be excited to share with others. The gospel is good news for our weary and burdened souls. We can work and work to be “good” but still never measure up. God gives us something much greater—He has done the work and by faith we are made complete in Christ. We are good enough because by faith Christ fills the gap. Our good works will come from our gratitude for what he has already done for us.
Are you still working to be good enough? Do you feel unrested? By faith, say yes to Christ’s invitation to rest in Him. He has already done the work!
