Remember this Feeling – Love
by Mara Albright
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life. —Psalm 143:8
Growing up, my family and I celebrated Christmas every year on Christmas Eve. We started first with going to church in the later afternoon, followed by a fondue dinner at home, and then our gift opening. That specific tradition stayed the same year after year, along with a tradition of love that my parents did for each other.
At the end of our gift opening every year, my parents gave each other a gift they called the “surprise.” That gift had to be nothing they asked for, and had no monetary limit. I remember watching the love in their eyes, and feeling their excitement as they looked at the final gift of the evening in front of them. They would never tell my sisters and me what they bought beforehand in fear of us accidentally ruining the “surprise.” The joy I saw in their faces knowing how much they loved each other, reminds me of how much joy God must feel when we show our love to him.
Each Christmas we are reminded of God’s “surprise” gift to us—his son Jesus. Although the gift is the same every year, it is truly the best gift we’ll ever receive. All we have to do as thanks in return is to love him and give our lives to him. God LOVED us then…he LOVES us now…and he’ll LOVE us forever!
What memory do you have of feeling love?
